Ziad Bassil's Gear Reviews

The Scala 2's strengths are clear. It captures the glide efficiency of a high-aspect wing while holding together as one block in turbulence, asking less of the pilot than other wings in its class. Its glide angle is on par with the Photon MS, and its thermal information is as rich as the XC Racer 2's — only it arrives more comfortably. That comfort comes with conditions. In weak thermals it climbs slowly, the risers are heavy, and even Bassil wishes for the Maestro 2's agility and the Allegro's handling. This isn't a wing that works light lift on feel; it's a wing that wins distance with long glides on days when the lift is alive. It suits the efficiency-minded XC pilot who wants to go far in comfort more than the pilot chasing a thrilling, hands-on feel.
